Donald Trump calls criminal charges against him 'banana republic indictments'

Former President Donald Trump has a new term for the criminal charges he’s facing for alleged campaign finance violations, mishandling classified documents and trying to overturn the 2020 election.

“These are banana republic indictments. These are Third World indictments,” the 2024 presidential candidate said in an interview with NBC that aired Sunday.

Mr. Trump went on to tout his lead in primary polls over his GOP rivals and suggested that President Biden played a role in his indictments. There is no evidence of Mr. Biden doing so.

“I’m facing four Biden indictments,” Mr. Trump said. “He told the Justice Department to ‘indict him,’ or [Attorney General] Merrick Garland said, ‘Let’s indict him.’ They indicted their political opponent.”

Mr. Trump’s federal charges for alleged mishandling of classified documents after leaving office and his efforts to overturn the 2020 election were brought by special counsel Jack Smith.

The former president also faces state charges in New York for alleged campaign finance violations related to hush-money payments before the 2016 election and in Georgia for trying to overturn the state’s 2020 election results.
