Saints sign Jake Luton to 53-man roster from Panthers

The New Orleans Saints have made a roster move, and it might help the Tampa Bay Buccaneers prepare to face them in Week 4.

ESPN reporter Field Yates reported on Tuesday that the Saints have signed quarterback Jake Luton off of the Panthers practice squad directly to their 53-man roster ahead of the team’s Week 4 matchup against the Bucs. Luton previously played for the Saints in 2022 before going to Carolina.

The most interesting part of this move is what it means for Saints QB Derek Carr. His immediate elevation to New Orleans’ active roster could be a sign that the team doesn’t think Carr will be able to play on Sunday against the Bucs and would like some insurance for an emergency quarterback. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers could then prepare not for Carr, but for former Bucs QB Jameis Winston, who the team already has a decent familiarity with.

The Bucs will face off against whoever is under center in Week 4 at 1 p.m. when they travel to New Orleans for their first divisional game of the year.
