Cincinnati Bengals wideout Ja’Marr Chase plays in an AFC North division with tons of talented cornerbacks, but he didn’t name any of them when asked who was the best defensive back he’s played against — instead, he looked to Tampa Bay.
Chase recently did an interview with former NFL defensive back Devin McCourty for NBC, and when asked who the best cornerback he’s ever faced was, he tabbed Bucs CB Carlton Davis. Chase particularly praised the way that Davis plays with his length.
“For me, I’d say Carlton Davis,” Chase said. “Only reason I say Carlton Davis is because he longer than I expected, longer arms, and he ain’t got no knee bend — he just hunched his back over and played defense. I think I’ve played him twice, too, and he made some good plays on me, so I ain’t never gonna forget that one.”
Davis and Chase have actually only gone up against each other once in the regular season, when the two faced off in 2022 at Raymond James Stadium. Chase caught seven passes for 60 yards and a touchdown, but he was targeted 13 times and averaged just 4.6 yards per target. Chase’s touchdown came when he was being covered by safety Keanu Neal and Davis was on wideout Tyler Boyd. The second time came during preseason of Chase’s rookie year, where the two squared off in 2021.
So far in 2023, Davis has four passes defended and 17 solo tackles in five games of action.
