Social media platform X will soon remake its algorithm to help boost the reach of smaller posters.
According to a post from owner Elon Musk, the update is expected to roll out in the next few days and show users more ports from outside their friends and followers.
“A major update to the recommendation algorithm is rolling out over the next few days,” he wrote on X. “This will help surface smaller accounts and posts outside of your friend-follows network. As always, this will be made open source and undergo continuous improvement.”
The decision to change the algorithm is in step with Mr. Musk’s plans to turn X into a creator-centric platform like YouTube. Since taking over the site last year, he has overseen the implementation of several features intended to entice creators to keep more content on X.
Paid subscribers to X can post extra long text posts and videos and can participate in the ad-revenue sharing program. According to X CEO Linda Yaccarino, the platform has doled out over $20 million to users since the start of the program.
The new algorithm could see more of the ad revenue going to smaller users on the platform. So far, only large creators that already had a significant following on X have been able to generate enough money on X, which has made most users weary about transferring from YouTube or other platforms to X.
The attempt to spread the revenue around could work. However, as more competitors to X pop up, such as Threads and Bluesky, revenue could dry up.
