Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans made his Saturday deadline for the Bucs very clear, and with that deadline approaching, no deal has been made yet.
Evans spoke to media for the first time since he and his agent released a statement insinuating that they would no longer negotiate with the Bucs if he isn’t extended by Saturday, Sept. 9 two days from now. When initially asked about his extension, Evans was very candid about the process and his desire for a new contract.
“Obviously, we’ve been working with them for over a year now to get something done,” Evans said Thursday. “Any player in my position would want to be solidified and secure. But if the deal is done or not, either way, I’ll be okay. I’m looking forward to having a great season.”
Evans stressed multiple times that both he and the Bucs want different things. Evans is reportedly looking for a deal close to what Cooper Kupp has with the Rams, which would be worth over $20 million a year. For the Bucs, that prospect could be daunting when it comes to a receiver who just turned 30 years old.
“Ownership and management are going to do what they feel is best for the team and the team’s future. I’m going to do what’s best for me and my future,” Evans said. “Right now, that’s just playing some good ball.”
The Bucs have until Saturday to reach an agreement with Evans. According to his agent’s statement released on Sept. 1, he and his agent will “discontinue contract negotiations” with Tampa Bay entirely and focus on playing football for the 2023 season.
Regardless of how his contract negotiations go and what ends up happening, Evans made one thing clear — in 2023, he’s here to play football for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“I’m blessed to be in this position,” Evans said. “A lot of people dream of making it to Year 10. I’m happy to be here. I feel great. I’m looking forward to a great season.”
