A woman died at an Alabama hospital Thursday after her car went through cables and crashed off the fourth floor of the hospital’s parking garage.
The deceased woman was the only person inside the wrecked car, the Birmingham Fire & Rescue Service Department (BFRS) said in a post on Facebook.
The silver sedan was found flipped upside down, resting on its roof.
The incident at Grandview Medical Center in Birmingham happened sometime before 8:30 a.m., when Birmingham and Rocky Ridge firefighters were sent out.
Officials do not know whether the victim, who appeared to be middle-aged, was a hospital employee, BFRS Battalion Chief Clay Hendon told local news site AL.com. She was not publicly identified by fire officials.
Firefighters began rescue efforts upon arriving but stopped once they reached the victim and found out she had already died.
The exact cause of the incident is still unknown, Chief Hendon told AL.com.
“More times than not, usually the guide cables will catch them. I don’t know the speed she was traveling, but this time they didn’t stop her, and she was able to come off the deck,” Chief Hendon said.
