New video has emerged of a quick-thinking shopper using a bollard to stave off the knife-wielding maniac who killed six people at an Australian mall.
The short clip shows the mystery man waving the post at Joel Cauchi, stopping the slasher in his tracks halfway up the Westfield Bondi Junction escalator.
The brave shopper inched closer to the madman with the heavy base of the bollard aimed at Cauchi like it was a projectile.
The hunting knife police say Cauchi used to kill innocent shoppers — including a new mom and a multi-millionaire businessman’s daughter — is clearly visible in his clenched hand, the footage obtained by 9 News shows.
Unfortunately, the 5-second clip does not reveal how the showdown ended, but investigators say it was a female cop who single-handedly confronted Cauchi and ended his tirade.
Amy Scott, a high-ranking inspector at the Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command, fatally shot Cauchi once in the chest when it became obvious he wouldn’t surrender, police said.
Her brave response could also prove to be ironic — police are investigating whether Cauchi was targeting women in the deranged attack.
Five women and one man — believed to be a security guard trying to stop the knife-wielding attacker — were killed, NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said.
Eight others injured during the attack were women.
Among the dead is 38-year-old mother Ashlee Good, who desperately passed her nine-month-old baby off to a stranger after she and her infant were stabbed, a move that saved her daughter’s life.
Dawn Singleton, 25, was the second victim killed during Cauchi’s attack, which began shortly after 3 p.m. local time at the popular mall.
Her father is Australian multi-millionaire businessman John Singleton.
Two of the six victims were from overseas and have no family in Australia.
Cauchi had a history of run-ins with law enforcement for “mental health-related issues, police said.
The shopping center remains closed on Sunday and will be an active crime scene for days.
