Credit where credit is due — Mayfield lowering the shoulder to get a first down late in the fourth quarter helped the Bucs win the football game, but it was an overall rough outing for the new Bucs QB.
Mayfield went 21/34 for 173 yards (5.1 yards per completion) and two touchdowns, one of which came after a penalty allowed Tampa Bay to try again in the red zone. Mayfield’s second half was much better than his first, but he still played wirey and erratically all game. He threw the game-winning pass to Chris Godwin, but it was a bad ball that Godwin had to make a miraculous catch on to seal the game.
There was some marginal improvement late, but Mayfield simply has to be better if the Bucs want to win games in the future.
