Poll shows more Democrats than Republicans side with Hamas

One in five Democrats side with Hamas amid the IsraelHamas war, according to a new poll.

The survey, by Issues and Insights and Techno Metrica Institute of Policy and Politics, found that 20% of Democrats supported Hamas. More than half of Democrats, at 54%, sided with Israel, and 26% said they were not sure.

Still, the percentage of Democrats supporting Hamas was higher than Republicans. Of those surveyed, only 7% of Republicans said they sided with Hamas, while 71% said they were with Israel and 22% said they weren’t sure. Independents supported Hamas with 6%, while 50% sided with Israel and 44% were not sure.



The poll found that generally more than half of Americans, at 58%, sided with Israel, while 11% supported Hamas and 31% weren’t sure.

The younger generation was more likely to back Hamas or to be undecided. Out of those surveyed ages 18 to 24, 30% said they supported Israel, 17% sided with Hamas and 53% were not sure.

For those aged 65 and older, 84% said they supported Israel, a mere 2% sided with Hamas and 14% were not sure.

Amid the conflict, Jewish people around the country have said there has been an uptick in antisemitic behavior. The poll found that 74% of those surveyed called antisemitism and anti-Jewish prejudice either a “very serious” or “somewhat serious” problem. Another 11% found it not “very serious,” while 4% said the behavior is “not a problem at all.”

More Democrats, at 82%, labeled the antisemitic behavior “serious,” than Republicans, with 76%. Independents, at 66%, labeled the behavior as “serious.”

The national poll was conducted online with 1,400 adults from Nov. 1-3. The margin of error was plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.
