Multi-car crash on Maryland highway kills one, sends five others to the hospital

A person was killed near Olney this weekend following an early morning multi-car crash in the eastbound lanes of Maryland Route 200.

Five other people were hospitalized.

The crash occurred just before 4 a.m. on Sunday, before the exit onto Georgia Avenue in Olney on the highway also known as the Intercounty Connector (ICC).

A silver Toyota Corolla, purple Honda Odyssey and a black Nissan Rogue were involved, the Maryland Transportation Authority said in a press release.

A tractor trailer was also caught up in the collision, Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service Public Information Officer Pete Piringer posted on X, adding that two people were trapped separately in two of the vehicles involved.

Officials did not say exactly how the crash occurred or how each car was involved. A passenger in the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene, the MDTA said.

The driver of the Nissan, a second passenger in the Nissan and the driver of the Toyota were all hospitalized with serious injuries, while the driver of the Honda and a passenger in the Honda went to the hospital with minor injuries, officials said.

Another two people at the scene refused transport, Mr. Piringer said in his X post.

None of the people involved were named by authorities.

The crash caused some eastbound lanes on the highway to be blocked, with the road only being declared all clear around 9:30 a.m. the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security said.

The MDTA Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate what caused the crash.
