Latest update on contract negotiations with Bucs

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are still working to secure a long-term contract extension with quarterback Baker Mayfield before the start of free agency next week, but where do things stand at the moment?

While both sides have maintained publicly that they want to run it back for 2024 and beyond after Mayfield’s career year in 2023, recent reports have indicated that Mayfield may have been seeking more than $40 million per year on his next deal.

According to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, that number isn’t something that’s being pursued by Mayfield’s camp.

The going rate for a quality starting quarterback in the NFL isn’t cheap, so it wouldn’t be surprising if Mayfield saw that kind of money on the open market. That said, if the Bucs are able to get close enough to whatever his asking price does happen to be, they should be able to keep any potential suitors from having a chance to drive up the price when free agency opens.
