Yet another member of the 2022 Tampa Bay Buccaneers squad is retiring.
Former Bucs outside linebacker Carl Nassib announced on Wednesday that he is retiring from the NFL after seven seasons in the league. Nassib has played for three different teams during his NFL tenure, but the three years he played for the Bucs is the most of any of those three teams.
Nassib was drafted by the Browns in 2016 and came to Tampa Bay in 2018. Across the three years he played for the Bucs (2018-19 and the 2022 season), Nassib had 61 tackles, 16 sacks and three forced fumbles across 42 games with the team. Nassib focused on the Bucs in his retirement post on social media, particularly praising general manager Jason Licht and the organization.
“I want to also thank Jason Licht and John Spytek. These two reignited my career not once… but twice. I was fired twice, and they picked me up both times. I played my best football in Tampa and it never would have happened if it weren’t for those two legends.”
In 2021, Nassib became the first active NFL player to publically come out as gay. Nassib has worked with and donated to the Trevor Project, which focuses on suicide prevention for LGBTQ+ youth. In his social media statement, he revealed that he’s stepping away from football to focus on his company Rayze, which helps connect people to each other and to non-profits in their area.
