The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have quite the task ahead of them on Sunday.

They’re set to face one of NFL’s best teams in the San Francisco 49ers, who just snapped a three-game losing streak with a dominant showing over the Jacksonville Jaguars. It’s going to be a tough matchup for the Bucs, and on top of that, Tampa Bay hasn’t performed well against San Francisco in the past.

There are a few connections between these two teams, from head coach Todd Bowles’ playing days to two players currently on Tampa Bay’s roster. Check out five things to know about the Week 11 matchup on the West Coast:

The San Francisco 49ers have gotten the better of the Bucs over the course of the two’s franchise histories.

The two teams have played 26 total times, with the 49ers leading the all-time series 19-7. San Francisco has also won the last two matchups in a row, the most recent being a drubbing in 2022 against the Tom Brady Bucs 35-7. The last time the Bucs won was in 2018, when quarterback Jameis Winston led the team to victory 27-9 in Raymond James Stadium.

Todd Bowles will be going up against a team he once donned a helmet for during his playing career.

Bowles played for the San Francisco 49ers in 1991 during the backend of his career. In the one season he played for them, he played in all 16 games and started 14, netting an interception in the year at free safety. Bowles is far more known for his tenure with Washington, whom he played seven seasons with.

57 players have donned both a Bucs and a 49ers jersey, and nine of those players are currently active. Of those nine, only two currently play for the Bucs in kicker Chase McLaughlin and swing tackle Justin Skule — other notable alumni of both teams include linebacker Kwon Alexander, punter Bradley Pinion and quarterback Blaine Gabbert.

Bucs QB Baker Mayfield doesn’t have the best history against San Francisco.

In his two games against the 49ers (one with the Cleveland Browns and one with the Carolina Panthers), Mayfield has completed 28 passes on 58 attempts for 315 yards, zero touchdowns and three picks for 5.4 yards on average. He’ll be looking to put all that behind him and play a great game against San Francisco on Sunday.

EDGE Nick Bosa is one of the NFL’s most vaunted players at any position — as is Bucs LT Tristan Wirfs. This will be the first time the two face each other at the pro level, though, as Wirfs was injured when the two teams faced off against each other in 2022. The two have seen each other before in college, though, as they faced off in a Big Ten matchup when Wirfs’ Iowa Hawkeyes faced off against Bosa’s Ohio State Buckeyes.
