The Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded cornerback Carlton Davis III to the Detroit Lions this week, and the longtime starter wasted little time praising the fans in his new city.
In the process, though, Davis threw some (perhaps unintended) shade at Bucs fans.
During his introductory press conference in Detroit on Wednesday, Davis was asked about experiencing the Lions’ fan base first-hand in last year’s divisional playoff game. He remarked on the massive impact the fans had on the game-day environment at Ford Field, and made it clear that while the Bucs have a “decent” fan base, he thinks Detroit’s is on another level:
The week before that playoff game against the Lions, it sure felt like Bucs fans “took over” Raymond James Stadium as Tampa Bay dominated the Philadelphia Eagles in a 32-9 blowout victory.
Davis may not have intended any harm by his comments, but it won’t be surprising if plenty of Bucs fans take offense.
