Bucs fans react to trade with Lions for Carlton Davis III

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made a big splash on the first day of the NFL’s early negotiation period to kick off free agency, agreed to a trade that will send cornerback Carlton Davis III and a pair of sixth-round draft picks to the Detroit Lions for a third-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

It wasn’t a completely unexpected move for the Bucs, who gain a large chunk of additional salary cap space by moving on from Davis, who has missed 16 games in the past three seasons due to injury, and only has nine career interceptions in six years, but it still leaves Tampa Bay needing a new starter at corner opposite Jamel Dean.

After the news came down, we asked Bucs fans how they felt about the move, and here’s what they said:

The higher Detroit 3rd rounder seems more appropriate considering us giving up 2 later round picks in future years, but it was time to move on. I’m good with it.

Eh. Gave up our best corner and 2 picks for just a late 3rd rounder? Would’ve felt better getting a 2nd, or another pick to go with the 3rd. But I believe in Licht, so guess I’ll just hope Zyon steps up.

Contract year and better than losing him on a free. It’s clear Licht prefers young secondaries and Dean is good enough to be CB1 until this draft group can kick in

Good, he wasn’t the same player he was 4 years ago but getting paid like he was, moving on from him a yr earlier is the right move, Licht drafts secondary well and Todd is good at their development

Best ability is availability. He just was not around enough. Get an elite pass rush. Makes any secondary look better. Besides he never could catch the ball. I trust Jason

It sucks, because he was a player this staff developed and I liked him, but I trust @jasonrlicht I mean the pats still haven’t recovered from losing Brady, Bucs did in one offseason.

I think it’s a pretty proactive move. With the money he was paid and the injuries, as well as the depth in the cornerback postion for the Bucs, I think it’s a decent return to get.
