If Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield loves anything, it’s a good quote.
Mayfield has been in the news cycle as of late after Bucs running back Rachaad White said in an interview that Mayfield had figured out Minnesota’s defensive signals at halftime. The Bucs would go on to perform much better offensively after the break and beat the Vikings 20-17.
Here’s what White said on Buccaneers Radio Network Monday.
“We’re in there talking as an offense and he’s like, ‘I know all these signals. If they do this, they’re going into Cover-2. If they do this, they’re going into Cover-3. Every time I alert this and they do this signal, they’re dropping back to this.’ And I’m like, ‘Wow, that’s amazing.’ … I was just listening to him and we were listening to him and we just kind of understood.”
Naturally, Mayfield was asked about this during his media availability on Wednesday, and he had a great answer to the question while evoking the 2019 cheating scandal from Major League Baseball’s Houston Astros.
“I’m a Texas Rangers fan, not a Houston Astros fan,” Mayfield said. “So we’re not going to condone that.”
NFL teams often frequently change their signs and simply figuring out how they are being used is not a form a cheating, so there would never be a crackdown on Mayfield like there was on the Astros. Regardless, the reference is another example of Mayfield’s charisma behind the podium.
